Cooking using your computer!

even if you do not own a Prescott based Intel processor, you can still cook with your computer if you have 30 unused USB ports available =)

originally an USB cup warmer, Kaizo Aho Ichidai, creator of this thingamijig, unsurprisingly finds it inadequate for frying an egg.
thus, he bought 30 USB cables and matching hubs and modified the cup warmer to run on the combined power.
given each USB port provides 500mW of power, 30 of them would provide 15W, enough for a bit of barbecueing.
he cooked some frozen meat within minutes after that.
do not try it at home though. unless you have an USB-powered Fire Extinguisher ready.

This is the 300th post by the way.
Mediacock is moving to
Bukit Batok by 2011!

they are gonna move out of Caldecott Hill along Lornie Road and to a new 70,000 square metres media complex at Bukit Batok!
the new complex will house all of their TV (MediaCorp TV, TV12 and News), Radio (MediaCorp Radio) and Print (MediaCorp Publishing and News) operations.
they are also considering taking up some space in Fusionpolis, One North, which is being developed as a media hub in Singapore. which is around Dover as well!
this means in the future, we are probably gonna see Christopher Lee or Fann Wong right in Western Singapore!
sounds pretty exciting to me. provided I dont move out of the West by then lah.
==
since I have an open hatred for mediacock, lets talk about the less glitzy details.
CEO of Mediacock is the fifth richest guy in Singapore at US$1.9 billion. doesnt it make you wonder where all the moolah come from. I think it is probably from putting crap on TV and thus cutting costs.
anyway, he says the move to a greenfield site in Bukit Batok will help mediacock "improve workflow, enjoy business synergies and efficiencies and help improve our services to deliver valued content to the world".
yeah right, it is probably just to cut costs further and make him even richer. Bukit Batok land is much cheaper than Caldecott Hill land since Thomson area is where all the rich people lives.
if they sell those land, they will make a huge load of moolah! that doesnt mean the shows will be better though. they will probably just give a "Progress Package" to all mediacock staff like the gahmen.
==
okay enough ranting. lets all look forward to the new complex and hope that mediacock would bring us better shows with the improved complex.
remember, you heard it first on deskoh91.blogspot.com. actually I am a bit slow lah. it is released like last week =P

I am sorry.
I did not expect a small careless comment of mine to hurt you so much.
I underestimated the power of words yet again.
truly sorry.

a letter I sent to HP regarding the servicing of my notebook.
==
Hi Desmond here. I acquired this Presario V2000 series notebook from a joint HP-StarHub Promotion in December 2005.
Since I got it in January until now, I found the notebook to be a handy companion on my trips with its relatively light weight and small form factor. Its design is also refreshing and elegant compared to some of the other notebooks on the market.
However, I had faced several problems on the notebook which I thought will go away with time but did not happen.
One of the most severe ones would be the extremely flimsy hinge of the screen. When I am typing on the notebook keyboard, the screen is so loose that the panel practically shook along with my every keystroke. Even when I am surfing the net on the notebook with a fan spinning at lowest speed, the same thing still happens.
At first, I thought it is probably a design defect of the series, but when I compared my screen hinge to another V2000 my friend owns, I noticed his is much more stable than mine.
I am rather surprised and disturbed by the inconsistent workmanship of a similar model of notebook from a well-known company with a proven track record in computing products.
Another issue would be on the battery life. I understand that Turion 64 based notebooks consumes slightly more power than their Intel siblings, but I am appalled when I noted the battery life to be only nearly two hours with only surfing with wi-fi on.
Even with the various tweaks recommended by HP on screen brightness and power options as well as various tweaks I found, I only managed to bring the battery life to slightly over 2 hours.
I am wondering whether this is due to the technical nature of the product or is it simply another flaw on my notebook. If the former applies, I am pretty affected by the portability of the notebook and I hope HP could do something about this.
These problems affected the way I used the notebook and considering the notebook is still covered by the warranty, I am wondering if I could send the notebook to HP to perform any required servicing and enhancements. If it is possible, may I also know how should I go about packing it for delivery to HP.
Thank you for your help.
==
how is it? I did this in about 15 minutes or so. what I am more concerned now is whether they will ever reply. if they dont, I will just have to call them and bug them till they take it in and repair. they have to repair it no matter what. bwahahaha.

New Posts Sorting System
Tuesday, August 22, 2006
as you can see, I am trying out a new method of organising my posts.
the various types of posts I typically create are sorted into a few main groups in the title. this is mainly to improve accessibility and a new feature of the blog of dEsKOh91.
content of post would still not be posted in the header mainly for organisational purposes.
==
currently, I have only a few groups ready, namely:
Life: As its name imply, it is a post about my monotonous daily life. it may be packed with little titbits once in a while though.
Inbox: Catalogue of stuff I found on the web or elsewhere which interests me and I think may interest you as well.
Sights: If I had a whole load of random pictures or a few interesting ones, I will showcase them to the world through a Sights post.
Area 51: Emotional dumpsite. typically known as a Emo post, for my spasms of depression that seems to be increasing.
FR: Full Report. when I try or visit somewhere, I tend to have little comments about them. they will be a FR post.
Patch: Very unlikely to appear but just in case. When I make any changes to my blog, it will be announced in a Patch post.
==
dont know how things will work out, but I will try them out for two weeks or so and decide whether I should withdraw it.

geography class test is over. I screwed up the coastal management part pretty bad. can only blame myself for not studying that final part, thinking it is unimportant.
and speak of the devil, the most unlikely erosional feature to be tested, Beaches, are tested! my gut feeling is right after all! luckily I paid a bit more attention to that
can pass, but not splendid. disappointed once again. damn.
==
my gut feeling tells me that I am gonna burst my 360 SMSes limit this month. and my fingers are probably gonna get a lot more nimble too.
is that good or bad? bad because any excess SMS cost is gonna be borne by me. good because I can finally familarise myself with the keypad as much as the keyboard.
==
no idea what else to update.

this is definitely funny.
remember PM Lee's rally? in the speech, he made a mistake with the "Mee Siam Mai Hiam" (Mee siam without chilli). pronouncing it as "Mee Sian Mai Ham" (Mee sian without cockles).
Mr Brown, in his usual satirical humour, made a podcast about this blunder, mixing it with the song My Humps by Black Eyed Peas. see the link now? no? listen and you would do =)

Entering A New Milestone!
Monday, August 21, 2006
I have changed the blogskin to another bleach-themed one. it isnt exceptionally nice, but at least it is roomy enough for any larger photos I may be posting. (or I hope).
this blog began all the way back in March 24, 2003 with the same address. 3 years and 5 months later, the blog now contains 294 posts. (including this one)
certainly 294 posts is a small number compared to some others' blog. but considering I took a long 6 months hiatus last year and my irregular postings, it is expected.
dEsKoh91 v6.0 started all the way back in October 12, 2005, just after the End-Of-Year Examinations. thinking about it, it is over 10 months without a new skin now!
this refresh is certainly long overdue, especially since when I mentioned it in early May this year. this would stay till maybe the end of this year or further, so better get used to it.
I am trying to resolve the scrolling problem now. be patient.
anyway, thank you for visiting dEsKOh91's Blog v7.0!

history common test is over. I knew all the points! hope the way I wrote is actually right so that chloe png will give me the marks =)
took Blogger Beta for a test drive. first, you cant switch over if you have team blogs (blogs with more than one username). since I have four team blogs of a total of six blogs, I had to create a new blog to test it out.
I noticed not much change in general. you can now tag your entries (for technorati) and it also lets you drag and drop to rearrange the contents in blogskins (only their default skins are supported so far though).
the create post menu did not offer much improvements. I expected to see a more full feature font list or hyperlink and strikeout buttons but I am disappointed.
so dont get swayed by pys' marketing and switch to the new one hoping to see more new stuff. there simply isnt.

I could go either way. Deep into the madness of nights filled with coding CGI-Scripts and online role playing games, or I could become a normal user. Good luck!

spotted this on ellise's blog since I saw her tagging on zp's tagboard. (sign of better things to come?)
decided to use this chance to figure out each of the faces of those 2/5 girls with weird names as well.

looks familiar? shyam wrote the same thing for us. theirs go "Interesting Facts about 2/5" (though parts of it are gone) while ours goes "Amazing Facts about 3/5".
does number 1 suggest their class excel in maths? maybe not. number 2 says half of them dont. and apparently they joke around a lot too.
ours just say "90% of the population are tired 150% of the time" and another few that I forgot.
we shouldnt blame it on shyam for falling asleep in maths then. after all 2/5 is hyperactive during those lessons.
I think it must be the system. seeing miss shyam an hour (or more) daily for A and E Maths is well... dry. especially when upper secondary maths have so much to go through and yet so abstract.
add to the fact that one doesnt like maths and the disappointment of failing it often, it is no wonder people prefer sleeping.
seriously, I dont sleep during lessons. the most is I feel drowsy but I never succumb to the dark side. feel it is pretty impolite to do that. after all they are just doing their job.
really time to buck up my maths before it is all too late and I end up in ITE (nooooooooooooooooo!)

maths common test is today. pretty bad, pretty bad. I only started recalling everything towards the end of the paper.
shouldnt have looked at shawn's answers. now everyone laughs at me. whats more it is only for 2 pathetic marks.
since I am (quite) a righteous person, my conscience is actually pricking on me. even though it is only 2 marks. really quite regretted doing that.
the last two common tests are history and social studies. I must really try to study for those two already. they are my favourite subjects. hope I can shine this time.

I am 45% Geek.

You probably work in computers, or a history deptartment at a college. You never really fit in with the "normal" crowd. But you have friends, and this is a good thing.

an article from TalkingCock regarding the Tammy NYP incident.
I actually "translated" some of the hokkien words inside which some people cannot understand and also explained some things.
this should also satisfy those who wanted to watch the video so much but cannot find (read: legolas).
for the video, visit here. it is at the bottom. pretty accurate (but only a small part) representation of the real video.
==
Ngee Ann Poly Student’s Sex Video Not as Popular
by Kway Png ("Chicken Rice")

*Chin Ah Pooi literally means "Very Fat".
Attractive NYP student Tammy had lost her cellphone, in which she had stored a video of her having torrid sex with her boyfriend. Whoever found it circulated it online, where it has spread faster than kaya on hot toast and caused a huge uproar, no doubt because sex is such a rarity amongst Singaporeans.
Ms. Chin’s video, which also shows herself having intimate relations with a fellow Ngee Ann schoolmate, however, has pretty much stayed put despite her mass-mailing it to everyone she knows under a file named ‘Tummy NP’.
“I also donno why,” said Ms Chin, 17 years old and 170 kg. “I also did everything that Tammy did. In fact, I showed even more flesh than Tammy.”
According to some who have received Ms. Chin’s video, that may have been the problem.
Said Mr. Quah Por Noh ("Cannot See Road") a fellow NP student, “I got her video, but I think there was so much pork on display that my email program immediately classified it as spam.” (SPAM is a brand of canned pork)
Ms. Chin declined to identify her partner in the video. “Let’s just say he’s someone I had a big crush on,” she said, adding that he’s currently staying in “one of the major hospitals”.
The police, however, have confirmed that they have received complaints about the video, just like in the Tammy NYP case.
In the Tammy NYP case, the allegations are of an offence under the Films Act, which bars the distribution, showing, import or possession of obscene video recordings. However, in Ms. Chin’s case, the alleged offences are more generalized “crimes against humanity.”
“We take these complaints very seriously,” said ASP Pak Chew Cheng ("PCC" or masturbate). “For instance, we’re investigating the Tammy NYP case very intensely. A whole team of us review the recording everyday. Some of us have even made copies so that after working hours, we can continue analyzing the case at home. We’re even considering asking Tammy herself to come into the station to tender oral evidence and perhaps even do a re-enactment to aid our investigation.”
For Ms. Chin’s case, ASP Pak said that while they had opened a file, preliminary indications were that there was no breach of the Films Act. “The Films Act bars obscene films, not horror films.”
Meanwhile, the furore around the Tammy NYP case is growing unabated, with conservatives decrying low moral values and other hypocritical bullshit.
“Why should a blow job be so offensive?” wrote XiaLan (Variations in name of Xiaxue, a blogger), in her popular blog. “It happens metaphorically in the civil service everyday.”
Others, however, believe the ensuing debate could be beneficial in the long run.
“I think ‘Tammy NYP’ is a great sex education video,” said Mr. Lai Kan Wah, ("Come screw me") “Tammy and her boyfriend are real role models. They’re having safe sex. They’re having sex with fellow citizens, not chao ang mors (caucasians) or Batam kways (Indonesian prostitutes), like most other sexually active Singaporeans.
I also think it will shake up the curriculum at the Film, Sound and Video course at Ngee Ann Poly. Despite being the leading film school in Singapore, none of their student films have reached an audience as wide as ‘Tammy NYP’. The Singapore Film Commission should give her a scholarship.”
Meanwhile, conspiracy theorists are casting a skeptical eye on the whole affair.
“I bet ‘Tammy NYP’ is a hoax,” said popular underground blogger Mr. Pierogi. (Variations of name of Mr. Miyagi, another blogger) “I bet the Gahmen cooked it up to obscure sensitive issues in the upcoming elections like Ministerial pay and the NKF.”
Aside from Ms. Chin, more copycat versions of ‘Tammy NYP’ are flooding the Web, including:
- ‘Thambi NYP’: a young Tamil couple shagging in a boutique hotel along Serangoon Road.
- ‘Ramli NYP’: video footage of a young Malay man having indiscreet relations with a Ramly burger from a pasar malam.
- ‘Granny NYP’: which is just too horrible to describe.
Ms. Chin is philosophical about her video’s comparative lack of popularity, saying, “Oh well, it’s just one of those mysteries of the universe, like why Nanyang Polytechnic is abbreviated as ‘NYP’, while Ngee Ann Polytechnic is abbreviated as ‘NP’.”

14/8 - Monday
one week passed since I last updated again!
==
last week was a busy one, especially from thursday to sunday since the class is busy preparing and running the Haunted House at the CSS Food & Fun Fair.
a big thank you to all who visited the Haunted House! we served a total of 237 groups with about 4 persons per group and collecting over S$4000.
this is a really memorable experience for me and I believe many others as well.
==
for thursday and friday we had to wait for CMB to clear and can only start work at about 4+, where we cleared things and moved tables down. the rest of the friday is spent putting up black cloth to form the "routes".
real decoration work only started on saturday. the amount of things we accomplished within that one day is impressive since all rooms are decorated within that few hours. the final part of the day is spent on dry runs.
==
onto the actual day. for me, I am an usher 3/4 of the time, leaving wenna and mx busy with the counter work. I spent 2pm to 3pm grabbing people legs. pretty boring I would say.
ushering is no easy job. you go to the entrance and bring a group down to the entrance to the room where they will wait while their eyes get used to the darkness and for the next route master to guide them through.
the ushering allowed me to know the seniors better and also allowed me to see many groups of customers arriving.
==
the most popular would have to be the four Sec 1 NCC guys, who act macho at first but moved extremely slowly and even at once point broke the black cloth at one of the sections due to fear. real funny considering they are NCC.
I also saw a group with a small boy who left halfway through the entrance as he started crying after being scared too much. people below 7 shouldnt visit perhaps?
there is also this particular group who wanted to run away already while waiting at the entrance after seeing the route master. n00bs.
alicia, jinyee, jiahui and annanraj's group came after those four NCC guys who broke the cloth and thus had to wait 10 mins for some emergency maintanece.they screamed like mad women (actually annan didnt scream) despite the incident.
I would also like to take this oppurtunity to thank Annanraj for his patron. he came a total of eight times (S$40) to see a particular girl. 3/5 admires his dedication.
there is also one group with a very physical couple who kissed and groped like mad right at the entrance, thinking I cant see it since they cant as they havent got used to the dark yet.
to that couple, hello? it is haunted house, not some seedy underground hotel, even if there is aircon, dark and covered with cloth. okay?
this is about all the interesting people I can remember for now.
==
all we had to worry about now is competition from the henna stall, with their low cost price (paint and people only), good store location (right outside General Office) and practicallity (a nice decoration and takes no more than 10 minutes).
back when 1/3'04 did henna last time, we were the top earner and haunted house by 3/6'04 collected 3.6k. we shall see if the haunted house by 3/5'06 can beat them this time.
if they do, that means I am in the top earning class in both carnivals! w00t!

today's celebration and prize presentation day was uneventful. the NYAA awards part the names are printed so small that it is unreadable and there goes my only credit.
went to chun kit's house to change and went to sim lim square and funan with chun kit and wei lei after that.
I bought a router to replace the cranky old one as well as the electronic dictionary which I missed last monday.
the router is D-Link DGL-4300. set me back S$215. over two times more expensive than the cranky WRT54G at $79. but I am paying for the lifetime warranty, which means I wont need to buy another router for maybe the next ten years. bwahahahaha.
the dictionary is of course the PX2051 lah. wei lei bought one too. too bad it costs S$32. cant be helped. it is my own blunder anyway.
most of you cant be bothered, so I shant go on. but I will put pictures up of the DGL-4300 though. haha.

I HATE FORUMER!
the people running the forum must be retards or something. I chose phpBB first since it is "recommended", then seeing how limited its fuctionalities in the admin area is, I decided to choose Invision.
BUT
those damn asses say a phpBB board can only be shut down when you turn the board offline and leave it there for 30 days.
they obviously think other people are as free as them. 30 days later it will be september 1 or thereabouts and I have to do all this shit again.
cant they just bloody hell close that thing so the domain and usernames are free again and I can set up another forum in its place?
stupidity at its very best indeed.

the last time I posted is three days ago? time sure flies for this week as I anticipate some (and vice versa for others) activities happening next week.
do note that this post would also happen to be one of the most emotional post I may have written here in a long long time. so if you are prone to indirect degradatory or sarcastic comments, avoid the second and third sections.
==

hate reading blogs nowadays. there always seem to be something that piss me off from either the tags or the posts.
dont get me wrong. I am not stopping anyone from blogging. just thought I wanna give a comment.
and this is in general. not mentioning anyone in particular. or maybe I am. but you dont have to know who.
==
realised people are shunning away from me nowadays. like I got some disease or what.
when I talk to someone, it is either one word answers or that person just dao me. what the hell? today is a great example. I talk to some person and she just totally act as if she didnt hear.
that is fucking rude in my opinion especially when I dont know why. come on, I am appealing to you all, tell me what is so wrong about me to cause this to happen?
okay, I may have offended you somehow or someway, but I am will gladly apologise if I am really the one at fault and I didnt realise it back then.
so please? dont treat me this way anymore? I am really confused. one moment you are pretty friendly and the other moment it is as if I dont exist.
==
pretty glad to get those stuff off. it seems my emotions are getting pretty messed up these days. guess the main pillar of my emotional support is gone now.
I actually dreaded for such a day. and it has happened. and it apparently did quite a huge blow to me.
that is the main reason so many of these posts are coming up nowadays. it may seem poserish as how josef will put it, but I really want to find the answers to my questions.
really hope I wont need to write such posts anymore. but it feels damn great to have it out. no wonder people appear totally different on their blogs.
wonder if this post is as long as a typical "yuling post".
*yuling post is defined as a post that is extremely detailed and precise, often down to the time. such posts usually exceeds 2500 words. =)*
