"Happi"-ness Blog

Sunday, April 30, 2006

I got this link off one of the blogs that I read. I do not really know the people in real life. neither am I the err... happy type of people. just thought it is rather brave of them to stand up against the stereotyped views of everyone.

after me typing so much, even someone who have half a brain should know what the blog is about already. so I shall leave you with a quote of the original post.

I did rather badly for english so I do not feel like commenting on it at all. and I swear I will get back to posting normal stuff soon instead of strange links and articles. really.

Before you click on that link, there's a few things I need to warn you about.

1) You cannot be a ultra-conservatalist.
2) Neither can you be a religious fanatic.
3) You do not mind girlish words typed out in girlish fashions by a guy.
4) You cannot have low acceptance to minorites.
5) You must have tolerance against mushy-washy neoprints.
6) You understand that everyone's got their own preferences.
7) You MUST not flame their blog.
8) You do not mind guys having pinkish blogs.
9) You understand that they are real people with real lives and erm... real preferences.
10) Lastly, you do not mind 'happy' people.

Scroll down to the bottoms of the page if you still don't know whose or what's going on.

Straits Times: JC student kills himself, convinced his private parts were too small

Wednesday, April 19, 2006

third post of the day. too long never post so at once a lot of ideas mah. hehe.

this article hit the headlines of The Straits Times today (19th April 2006). I thought it is really seldom you see such topics appearing on ST so I posted it.

I think this JC guy did not die for a good cause. even his girlfriend did not say it is abnormal. but still, we cant blame him either since he has been known to be stressed over homework so this may have affected his mental stability already.

this really shows the lack of proper sex education in schools. guess the fact that size does not matter should be emphasised. elfie said so last year too.

JC student kills himself, convinced his private parts were too small
Suicide highlights importance of sex education in schools, says coroner
By Stephanie Yap

HE WAS a second-year student at a top junior college, a member of the school volleyball team, a 'cheerful and energetic' boy who was doing well enough in his studies to take Special Papers.

Yet on March 3 this year, the 18-year-old jumped to his death from a Bedok housing block, because he was convinced his private parts were too small.

Delivering a verdict of suicide yesterday, State Coroner Tan Boon Heng was sufficiently concerned by this 'tragedy of misinformation' to recommend that the case be forwarded to the Ministry of Education (MOE).

'The importance of sex education to our young people in schools cannot be over- emphasised'. he wrote.

'The case study is useful for relevant MOE officers to appreciate the problem of the severity of misinformation even among the best and brightest in our schools.'

The boy, who cannot be named, had confided in his mother in October last year that he was worried his private parts were too small.

She took him to a neighbourhood clinic, where the doctor told him his penis was of a normal size for an Asian man, and prescribed him multivitamins.

Despite strong emotional support from his girlfriend and his mother, he remained convinced he had a problem. He also had a history of being stressed over schoolwork.

In January this year, he told his mother that his life was 'boring and meaningless' and that the only thing stopping him from suicide was his family's love.

On March 3, after his usual volleyball practice, he took a bus from school to the Bedok interchange, but did not take his usual connecting bus home. When his sister sent him a text message at around 7pm to ask if he was coming home for dinner, he replied that he would eat out.

The next and final message she received from him was at 8pm, telling her and their mother to take care.

They realised something was wrong, but he repeatedly failed to answer his phone.

He jumped from a housing block near the Bedok bus interchange at around 8.30pm.

He was semi-conscious when he was taken to Changi General Hospital, but was pronounced dead at 10.40pm from multiple injuries.

In his suicide note, written in a notebook he had bought 40 minutes before his death, he apologised to his girlfriend and his family for killing himself.

'He said it was not due to the stress of his examination, but it was more about his physical development...He still knew there was something wrong with his body parts,' the investigation report said.

In his judgment, State Coroner Tan said the boy's death showed that even intelligent young people can be victims of misinformation.

'While we are the beneficiaries of this Internet age that hails an era of information and knowledge enriching our lives, the less-informed also become victims to junk information and worse, untruths,' he said.

'The deceased was so tormented by his unfounded (belief in his) inadequacy that it drove him to end his life.'

The case highlighted the importance of sexuality education, both in and out of school, he said.

'It may have helped if the deceased had the benefit of counselling now widely available. If parents are aware of their children being tormented in this way, they should seek professional help lest such tragic deaths should happen again.'

Sex education, usually termed sexuality education, usually takes the form of a short series of lessons.

One secondary school teacher with five years' experience told The Straits Times that at his school, sex education covers three periods a week for three weeks.

Students write reflection logs on topics like boy-girl relationships, different levels of intimacy, as well as legal issues.

However, he said teaching students how to be comfortable with their physical and sexual development is not in the syllabus.

'But this is something that should be looked into because it is definitely part of the students' development,' he said.

Hong Kah to occupy previous Commonwealth site

as every Commonwealthian worth his/her salt know, we will be shifting to a spanking new building that used to be River Valley's along West Coast Road.

I gurantee you that place is real peaceful. it is so peaceful that I think it will be too peaceful. we are essentially at the centre of the Teban Gardens and Pandan Gardens estate. guess you all dont even know what the heck are these two "Gardens".

well how do I know? the christian kindergarten and church my father has been a school bus driver at is right opposite the school building. it is called Calvary Pandan Kindergarten/Presbyterian Church in case you are interested.

I come from Galilee Kindergarten right opposite it though. my father is there till 2001 before he switched over to Calvary Pandan. though I am not a christian.

okay enough about my past. the focus of the post is of course, HONG KAH WILL TAKE THE COMMONWEALTH SITE AFTER WE LEAVE DURING JAN 2008.

http://www.moe.gov.sg/press/2006/files/pr20060324-annex.pdf

see for yourselves. after knowing this, I somewhat feel happy yet sad. happy because the building will not lie dormant, sad because Hong Kah have to inherit the badly damaged facilities for another 2 years.

still, the old CSS site is still bigger than the current Hong Kah site, and a new coat of paint will give it a fresh look from the outside.

and I think the condition of the facilities of the building will worsen when Hong Kah takes over. the schools packs a tough punch. take a look at the track record of the school and you will understand.

A Quick Update

since I havent updated since the Additional Maths Common Test and it is a week plus or so, I shall update again!

=

Maths

despite preparing for it, I still failed the A Maths Common Test. my dislike for maths has been fueled by the disappointing results time and again.

I never liked maths since Primary 4 but at least I managed to pull through most of them with a pass. but since this year started, it hadn't quite been the case.

now with Additional Maths on top of the already rather messed-up Elementary Maths, I am even more confused and pressurised.

shyam telling us that the maths papers are not going to be easy does not boost my morale much either.

I really hope both my maths can somehow improve. peers around me excel in maths but I do not. knowing the importance of maths, I guess I will need tuition or drop Additional Maths soon so I would not end up in the likes of ITE just because of this pesky thing called maths.

=

Mid-Year Examinations

enough about maths now. I can wallow in self-pity for another two hours thinking about it.

mid-year examinations is coming real soon. time really flies. I have been wearing long pants in school for almost half a year already! looking back, yes, wearing long pants is much better than shorts. heh.

next friday we will commence the slew of examinations with English. the only thing that really freaks me out is Maths. A Maths comes right after Geography (second paper, May 2nd) and E Maths is split into two days.

dont know if soh beng seng has a hole in his head or something. why would anyone set two papers for one subject on different days. I think his shiny head is supposed to tell something

*prays hard no teachers are reading*

the last paper is Biology. soh bs is real smart. putting the paper requiring the most memory work to the last day when we are somewhat in post-exam mood, making the cohort fail the paper. schools are evil I tell you.

*prays really hard no teachers nor anyone from school steering committee is reading*

anyway, I will be reflecting on each of the papers like what I did since Mid-Year Exams in Secondary 1. though expect more sob stories this time due to the increased difficulty of the papers.

=

Post-MYE and JC/Poly stuff

after exams I really want to unwind and take a break from the drone of studying, even for a while. this 4 months or so had been a really long time, the amount of new things learnt is equivalent of the entire Secondary 2 year.

I need some time to sort things out before continuing on the road leading towards the Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level). the name is taken off MOE website so it must be correct.

I cant imagine how my revision will be like for the second half of next year. this is making me really afraid. if their "Ordinary" level is already this bad, their Advanced level has got to be murderous.

I am thinking about going to a poly and Ngee Ann Polytechnic's School of InfoComm Techonology comes to my mind immediately. damn that iTechOne competition.

=

what is supposed to be a short entry turned out to be real long. since I havent crapped for a while, this is a great release from the pre-exam stress.

if you got this far, congratulations. now go on with your revision =)

Additional Mathematics Common Test Finally Over!

Monday, April 10, 2006

after not posting for a week or so, I would like to congratulate myself on crossing a large obstacle of this stage.

the additional maths common test is finally over! I spent quite some time reading through the notes and trying out the questions, including the time at my grandfather's grave and at night during the opening round of SuperBand.

I do not often dedicate so much time into preparing for a common test. but knowing that maths isnt my strong point, I decided to go the extra mile for it. and I am rather glad I am able to solve more than half of the questions on the paper.

even though the test is over, another load of homework came in once again. seems I can never rest till Mid Year Exams are over, or maybe the teachers will continue to teach so I would never get to rest till end of O Levels next year.

life is becoming such a pattern and it is rather boring being stuck in the cycle. but I am not having suicidal thoughts, there are things to look forward to in life (getting DGL-4300 for example).

CSS Esplanade Public Performance @ Thoughts

Saturday, April 01, 2006

after school ends at 2pm that day, I had to rush home and bath and change and rush to Boon Lay MRT station to meet Ying Sheng at 4.10pm.

both of us arrived at Jurong East MRT station at 4.20pm and started waiting for everyone to show up. finally we could leave at 4.40pm or so.

the MRT ride there is full of talking and photo taking, making the journey seem really short. soon we alighted at City Hall MRT station and walked through CityLink Mall to Esplanade.

after arriving at Esplanade, ying sheng and I snapped crazily at anything that is photo-worthy. the design of the building, the people around, some prominent landmarks in the area and blablabla. the rest simply walked around a bit and they decided to head to Clifford Centre for Dinner.

after that we headed back quickly to Esplanade, for it is going to rain soon and it is approaching the latest entry time of 6.45pm anyway.

I had been to Esplanade before so my real "first" is entering the theatre. from the moment ying sheng and I took the escalator up to Circle 2 and took our seats to the intermission and to the end of the performance, I could see that many aspects of the theatre are actually specially tuned for its purpose.

the roof is soundproof and bounces the sound around the theatre (with the bent slabs of blocks) the entire environment looks very classy and exquisite with all electronics hidden well. that explains its high rents.

theatre aside, the show was actually not a bad adaptation. it is rather localised, though the time frame seems to be different. also I did not even catch the ending at all and suddenly it is curtain call already. guess I cannot really appreciate arts well yet.

after the performance, we waited for chong keng's gang to come out before leaving. during that time, the girls took loads of pictures again, even after chong keng and the rest came. we wanted to go Lau Pa Sat to have supper.

however, no one knows what bus to take or how to get there, plus we are seperated from pei fen, shiva and pamela. so we decided to meet at City Hall MRT station and go to Jurong Entertainment Centre McDonalds to make things simple.

along the way back, the girls are going gaga over chong keng's broken arm. and poor chong keng is forced to repeat his long long story of how his arm got injured. things like protruding bones, fractures and operations made the girls slightly shrilly.

finally we arrived at Jurong Entertainment Centre McDonalds, where the remaining of us ordered something and talked for a while before heading home. I also used the chance to take metinee's memory stick and transfer the contents to my computer

I remembered I took 335 back home. the time I stepped into house at 2355. finally slept at 2am after bathing, MSN, surfing around and transfering the pictures.

this is an incredibly short entry as nothing really big happened this time round, what's more most of the time are spent watching the performance.

I am so glad that I am finally done with this set of 3 posts that set me back quite some free time.

CSS Esplanade Public Performance @ Photolog 2

POST NOTE: After finishing this entry, I noticed that I am almost putting up the photolog on behalf of metinee or something since more than half the photos have her face.

after completing part 1. here comes part 2. all photos featured in part 2 are courtesy of Metinee, who allowed me to use them.

you will see a lot of faces in Part 2 of the photolog since girls are usually very camwhor... zi lian one.

I have to admit that creating part 2 of this photolog is easier than the part 1 since there is nothing to comment on except who the people are in the photos.

girls being girls, they just cannot take one very nice picture. they will take a picture in the exact same pose two times to make sure it looks nice.

I have taken the liberty to take only the best ones out of many shots and post them up. approximately 10 photos are left out in the preparation of part 2.

with all that cleared. here we go!

ahsabi-g-e-ru at Jurong East MRT Station. some of them went to rebond their hair to make it look straight.

CSS Esplanade Public Performance @ Photolog 1

This is the largest photolog I ever had as of yet with over 100 photographs. I am forced to resize all pictures to a 320x240 size so as to prevent the pictures from taking overly long to load or 56k users to die from the wait.

this CSS Esplanade Public Performance entry had been split into three parts, with two parts being photolog and one being the afterthoughts.

in the two parts of the photolog, Part 1 features pictures taken with my Sony Ericsson K750i while Part 2 features those taken with Metinee's Sony CyberShot DSC-T9.

you will find more faces in Part 2 than in Part 1 since my habit is to take structures, not faces. but I took some extra photos towards the end of the night.

as I create many photologs, it is about time I watermark my pictures and optimise my photologging process by adjusting the resolution of the pictures before uploading.

after a break since last night, I will now continue the entry.

although I thought I had taken some pictures at the MRT station before proceeding to Esplanade, they are nowhere to be found. so I can only start with...

this sign. and their "world-class sign".

so world class. and the entire gang walked along the walkway towards Esplanade after crossing CityLink Mall.

and we reached the esplanade! hell a lot of scenic photos of the Esplanade since it is the feature of the day anyway.

and some other interesting sights in the area. the esplanade-logo-modelled street lamps and the skyline of CBD.

something that looks like an oil drill or something.

the famous spot for shooting pictures at night, Fullerton Hotel.

the mini merlion at Merlion Park across the Singapore River from Esplanade.

the clifford pier, where you take ships to Kusu Island. going to be closed down soon though..

they decided to go Clifford Centre for Dinner at the B1 Food Court.

no photography? haha.

they have fenced off an area of the food court where nothing is going on and all lights are off.

at the foodcourt, I decided to take a picture of each person in their ugliest position ever while they are eating.

first, all of them.

alicia comes first since she is in the best position for me to take an ugly picture =)

then metinee. actually this isnt very ugly but whatever.

then yik yie! use your creativity for this one.

the other two picture did not turn out the way I wanted it to as jin yee and pamela had their backs facing me and I cant take a proper picture without looking like some retard trying to focus the camera on their faces.

for ying sheng, I waited a long time before I took this picture since the way ying sheng eats is very the "wen ya" that could rival xinyi and jingwen.

zhepeng. also back view. but the fact that he is using hands to eat made me take a picture.

then we left Clifford Centre and headed back quickly to Esplanade for it is already 6+pm. one big piece of cloud I saw.

jin yee and metinee takes a picture with the durian. due to size you probably cant see the face properly.

yet another no photography sign. haha.

the main hall of the Esplanade. rather interestingly designed. semms to me there are some exhibition going on as well.

no touching. but can take picture right?

at the rooftop garden...

looking down from the rooftop garden...

the clearer skyline of the Central Business District from the rooftop garden. it will look much better at night though.

an interesting pavillion I saw from the rooftop garden as well.

then someone spotted the changing room somewhat a level down from the main hall. everyone hastily took a picture. notice farah at the corner of the picture.

and after some slacking around. we took the escalator up to the entrance to Circle 2 and 3. at first everyone panicked when the signboard read no handphones and pagers. luckily it is not mentioned by the staff.

the long hall that will lead you to a few entrance of Circle 2 and eventually Circle 3 (where you have to take yet another escalator).

in the theatre photography is actually not allowed. but I sneaked a few pictures nevertheless.

the roof

the three circles and the balcony.

stage.

okay enough shots of the theatre before The Esplanade Co. Ltd send a lawyer letter to me.

and so the show ended at 9++ and we waited for chong keng's gang to come out. eventually only chong keng and calvin is left and the other few cant be bothered slacking around with us.

chong keng (with his broken arm) and metinee.

interesting ball-looking structure at the area outside Esplanade. the previous time I shot this it didnt look so nice.

finally you see loads of people as everybody happily took pictures. they are not looking at my angle since they are facing other cameras and I just wanted to test my flash at the same time =)

first, alicia, metinee and jin yee

MX and metinee.

ying sheng and jin yee

the sign outside.

very class photo of Esplanade lighted up at night.

the "F4". lutfi, asayaraf, bahari and phyo's back views. haha

jin yee and xinyue

everyone concerned over chong keng's arm on the MRT to McDonalds Jurong Entertainment Centre.

these picture mark the end of part 1, essentially the pictures I took. part 2 will come soon.
