UPDATE 26/3: Added new photos from Yuling and details that was triggered from looking at those photos.

after several eons, I shall make another post! dont mind the cobwebs.

its not that I have nothing to blog about, its just that trying to blog them down takes a lot of effort cos I will have to spend a long time attaching the photos and writing stuff and then cleaning it up.

and because coming over to blogger and logging in with my full email address and password is just way too huge a first step. go count the number of alphabets in my email address please.

today's theme is the CSS New Media Club's March Camp! because it just happened yesterday and I was one of the organisers!

somehow the infotech clubs of commonwealth decided to amalgate into one huge CCA in line with the school's plan to become a Centre of Excellence (for the second time) for new media.

then an idea for its alumni was mooted somehow by the current IT HOD Gerald and yuling, making her the first "member" of it, so to speak.

from there on she asked me and a few others to join her to plan some activities and lessons for New Media Club. thus now we are running weekly lessons, as well as March and June Camps for this year.

camp planning by mind map on mahjong paper okay.

compared to my last attempt to do something for Cybernauts with the 2005 exco which I was part of, this time round we were much more successful.

enough of the background, now back to the camp.

Opening and Icebreakers

overall this camp is plagued by delays, and I mean serious delays. but most of the activities went as according to plan. this is a huge spoiler to a good camp experience as I experienced it as a camper before.

for June Camp, we should just start preparing the stations earlier instead of procrastinating from senior panda zhang's influence.

so I arrived at the level 4 instructional room at about 8am yesterday. they met at 7.30 and so yuling was already skimming through the day's events with the GLs.

I took over for a while too, running through the days events. I prepared that handout anyway so it was kinda like reading aloud.

rare shot of me not looking ugly for once!

later on jason started trying out some games with the GLs (sec 4 seniors) since some of them dont know what they were. how can anyone not know what is double whacko? sheesh.

while they did that, jiahao and I thickened the whacko sticks to make it extra heavy and painful and prepared materials. hoho. involved borrowing newspapers and pails for games later from general office.

we only managed to start at 9.30am cos assembling the campers gathered at the canteen (forgot to ask them to assemble at auditorium WTH) into 6 groups, marking attendance and the trial games took longer than expected.

then we brought them to the Auditorium for an opening, which included vocal warmup courtesy of panda zhang.

this happened just before everyone put their bags at instructional room before going down for icebreakers.

icebreakers is at parade square in their groups. some groups had plenty of fun (like group 6), others not so much (group 2), and some even left the females out for some reason (forgot group). where is the fun if there are no girls in the game?

shall see how the above can be improved. but it seems the group leaders' enthusiasm in carrying out the games affects that a lot..

one thing I noticed was they are real shy man. the runaway couple icebreaker needs them to hold hands with the left and right person. they won't dare to hold if the person is opposite sex until we egged them on. so cute sheesh.

so this ended at 11am (half hour behind time).

Movie Screening, Lunch and Station Preparations

then its back to Auditorium for movie screening while the GLs and us gathered at instructional room to take breakfast (assorted mcdonalds burgers and root beer sponsored by school lol) while discussing how to prepare later.

in the end the preparations was late cos the assigning of roles was slow. preliminary work for the stations began at around 12.15pm. during that time I shuttled between coordinating the campers down for lunch at canteen and the preparations.

the campers having their lunch...

then its the lesson on movies, which kinda puts all the theory they learnt in the past weeks in action. they had to drag this segment too, while we rushed to complete the stations' preparation.

junxiang and I carried the pails of water bombs to the stations till we want to die. long time since I used my arms that much till the muscle still hurts now lol.

but its not just us hard life, some GLs fill up the bombs till want to die also lol.

finally the games are ready to begin an hour behind schedule! we decided to make each station 10 minutes instead.

...what a wall of text. this is because I didnt take pictures at the front parts. will put in when I get from yuling.

from now on there will be pictures! be happy!

==

actually took these shots while I am supposed to prepare for the final game, which is also the alumni's lunch break. hard life.

and sorry to jiahao the senior panda for leaving halfway for this before returning! I will go through stations one by one..

Poisonous Web

the station that I supervised its creation, group members have to pass through the web but each hole only one use and everytime you hit the web the station master throws water bomb at you..

poisonous web at its completion..

the same thing from the direction the campers climb..

strategising for poisonous web..

pass the guy through like this. easy but not many groups did this. all shy.

Hole on the Ship

they have to pass water in cups tied to a particular body part decided by drawng lots. plenty of fun to watch definitely as they tried to pass in all kinds of positions.

kneecap to elbow..

kneecap to hand..

and the ultimate ankle to kneecap. check out the guy's position!

Bomb on Board!

they have to pass these water "bombs" down without touching them by hand and without moving. so they had to flick it from one pair to the other with the white trash bags...

too bad we only have 30 bombs for each group due to time constraints. can see the campers enjoyed this station most, but also the shortest. oh well.

step one.

step two. (they shouldnt have moved though).

and this goes on..

for the next one..

aftermath. check out the amount of water bombs dropped!

Numberbed Bridge

hard to take a proper shot of this one. basically the tables and chairs are marked with either a number, or an instruction such as "crawl through" or "males only". so its kinda like an obstacle course on these furniture.

Raft Building

group members learn to build a paper box with a piece of A4 paper before proceeding to fold this box on the newspapers they are standing on.

imagine how the girl feels smelling the legs with socks~~

can see them helping each other. good.

alternative shot..

Communication Studies

group members hold on to letters B A C K G R O U N D for a captain to form words from to score points.

perhaps the most boring game especially if you are the one holding the letters.

why are they all looking up?

this is why! so the "captain" can form words and tell the station master (in black, partially obscured by the captain)

as seen from the top! woo.

Final Game - Wet That Flag!

campers are in their groups as they race to defend their own flags while making other groups' as wet as possible.

the flag is made of newspaper. yes you seen that right. so its easier to damage you see.

pre-game briefing..

in their respective positions before the games start..

another shot..

didnt take pictures of them playing cos it will be too dangerous with all that water bombs. and you know we will be targeted zz.

after they gathered at the end of the game for briefing, we kinda tricked them into gathering at a lower level below us. we then attacked them with the bombs we had previously prepared. I threw 8 down at once. just imagine haha.

in return we got some revenge bombs in the end but its ok. its only fair I guess haha. at least everyone got nice and wet.

Prize Presentation
after the campers changed, we gathered back at auditorium to present prizes for winners of best campers and winners of the station games and final game. oh and best GL too.

thee best GL gets a iPod Nano-lookalike MP4 player leh. sponsored by school. heck
the 6 Best Campers each get a Sandisk 2GB thumbdrive. we bought it at IT Show lol.
the 2 Winners of Station and Final Games get a 48 piece box of Merci so can share.

Station Games Winner - Group 6

Final Game Winner - Group 4

Best Group 1 Camper

Best Group 2 Camper

Best Group 3 Camper

Best Group 4 Camper

Best Group 5 Camper

Best Group 6 Camper

Best GL (check out the prize!)

as a token of appreciation, the school actually gave every alumni a box of Toblerone. everybody together now. awwwwww.

Aftermath

the GLs and alumni did some area cleaning where necessary, reassembled at instructional room for debrief and went off together.

some of us (about 10) headed to IMM's Cafe Cartel for dinner cos junxiang can get staff discount (15% in fact. cool.)

this is the pre-discount bill. it was about 105 in the end cos they forgot jiahao and jason's order and both decided to cancel it.

overall, I thought the GLs are really nice people to work with and I am glad they were not as unenthusiastic as I would have thought. its great to finally know and work with juniors who actually wants to help.

it is also refreshing to finally do something with the support of the school. the food and materials and prices may be sourced by us, but the school picked up the tab. I am really thankful for their support so we do not have to collect a camp fee which turns people away.

with the GL and school's support, as well as the lessons the alumni will draw from March Camp, I am sure the June Camp will be much better. planning for that will commence on our next meeting (we had been meeting every Friday since holidays started man lol). hope there will be lesser delays and more fun for the campers!
