1st Summer Youth Olympic Games 2010

Thursday, November 22, 2007

Singapore was among the 5 cities that are official candidate cities for the inaugural 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games. I analysed the Panel of Experts' Report with bated breath (you need Adobe Reader to view it btw)

we are second in terms of ranking (RUS got 7.5 to 8.5, SIN got 7.4 to 7.9). Moscow (capital of Russia) is first as they have a good Olympics Village plan and good sports facilities, which are heavily-weighed, even though we won or equaled them in nearly everything else.

I took a look at their candidate city website, took a look at their bid books, did a bit of research and decided that we should just give up and wait for the 2018 one (the 2014 Youth Olympic Games is for Winter).

they are so well-oiled in preparing the Olympics bid. they tried for 2012 Summer Olympics but failed, then they tried for 2014 Winter Olympics and were successful (Sochi 2014). and now they are trying for 2010 Summer Youth Olympics. with their experience, our chances are really threatened.

but we shouldnt give up hope till the end! we are given a chance to comment on the Report, so we could clarify anything we had left out. selection is also by postal vote, so things are not set in stone even if we are not the best.

honestly speaking, we are doing quite well for a first timer. we accomplished near the level (for Moscow) or even surpassed (for Kuala Lumpur, Guatamela City and Athens) the veterans. our education programme for the YOG was rated 8 to 10 in fact. if we continue like this, I am sure we can do it.

I am not paid by the SNOC to do this. I am merely discussing this in my capacity as a Singaporean and is intended to be informative. hope you all would give your blessings to Singapore in this bid that would put us on the world map too =)
